The TCP/IP control panel

The TCP/IP control panel gets installed as part of Open Transport, along with the AppleTalk control panel. Its purpose is to direct which port or link the Mac will use to "talk" TCP/IP, just as the AppleTalk control panel controls which link is used to talk AppleTalk.

User Mode
The first time you open the TCP/IP control panel, you'll probably see a window with the fields you see here:

Above is "basic" mode, which contains a minimum of information so as not to confuse a novice user. There are 3 user modes: Basic, Advanced, and Administrator; modes are changed by selecting "User Mode" under the "Edit" menu, or using the 'Command-U' keyboard shortcut, which brings you to this window:

Below is the Administration mode, which is identical to Advanced mode, except for the options to lock and password protect the settings. Administrators may want to do this to keep the novice user from inadvertently changing the settings. The configuration information, as well as the mode type and password, if any, are stored in "Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences:TCP/IP preferences", where "Macintosh HD" is actually the name of the startup volume.
